About Center Point:

Center Point is a newly incorporated city and a former census-designated place located in Jefferson County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the community was 22,784. However, after its incorporation in 2002, the city's boundaries are much smaller than the census-designated place's were. As of the 2004 estimates, the poulation of the newly-created city is 15,130.

Center Point Geography:

Center Point is located at 33°38'21" North, 86°40'50" West (33.639302, -86.680437). or about 12 miles NE of Birmingham.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 20.9 km2 (8.1 mi2). 20.8 km2 (8.1 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.25% water.

Center Point Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 22,784 people, 8,826 households, and 6,434 families residing in the community. The population density is 1,092.8/km2 (2,830.4/mi2). There are 9,292 housing units at an average density of 445.7/km2 (1,154.3/mi2). The racial makeup of the community is 72.90% White, 24.23% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,826 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% are married couples living together, 15.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the community the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $40,929, and the median income for a family is $46,427. Males have a median income of $35,500 versus $25,544 for females. The per capita income for the community is $18,160. 9.5% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
